When to choose ASA

ASA is the outdoor ABS. Patio fixtures, garden hose brackets, mailbox parts, signage, license-plate frames, solar-panel mounts, roof-mounted antenna housings, outdoor camera cases, and anything in direct sun more than a few hours a day.

When to pick something else

If the part is indoors, ABS is cheaper and identical mechanically — save the markup. Skip ASA for food-contact (use PETG) or transparent needs (use PC).

DESIGN TIPS

Designing for ASA

  • 01Same print/design rules as ABS — enclosed chamber, 3 perimeters, shrinkage compensation.
  • 02For heavy UV exposure, additional top-coat paint extends life further.
  • 03Pair with stainless hardware for outdoor fixtures; avoid carbon-steel fasteners that rust.

ASA FAQ

How much does ASA 3D printing cost?+
ASA prints at $0.052 per cm³ (1.5× PLA). A typical palm-sized part (~20 cm³) runs around $1.58 including our markup. Exact price depends on quality preset, infill, and quantity — see /pricing for the full formula.
What is ASA best for?+
ASA is the outdoor ABS. Patio fixtures, garden hose brackets, mailbox parts, signage, license-plate frames, solar-panel mounts, roof-mounted antenna housings, outdoor camera cases, and anything in direct sun more than a few hours a day.
When should I NOT use ASA?+
If the part is indoors, ABS is cheaper and identical mechanically — save the markup. Skip ASA for food-contact (use PETG) or transparent needs (use PC).
What does TAKT 3D's ASA print setup require?+
Enclosed, heated chamber required — same setup as ABS. Standard brass or hardened nozzle; we run brass by default. All of our ASA jobs use filament dried the same day to avoid moisture-induced defects, and every spool is logged against the part batch for traceability.
How long is ASA 3D printing turnaround?+
Standard turnaround for ASA is 3–5 business days. Expedited (3 days) adds 30%; rush (1–2 days) adds 60%. Most small ASA orders ship within 48 hours from our San Diego shop.
