When to choose PETG

PETG is the right pick when you need a functional part that will be handled, cleaned, or exposed to chemicals. Bottles, food containers (single-use), drone parts, outdoor enclosures (moderate sun), lab fixtures, watering accessories, medical-adjacent non-contact hardware, and anything that needs to flex a few times before breaking.

When to pick something else

Avoid PETG for high-precision cosmetic parts — it's stringy and layer lines are more visible than PLA. Skip it for load-bearing structural parts at high temperature — step up to PC or PA6-CF. Skip for high-UV outdoor exposure — use ASA.

DESIGN TIPS

Designing for PETG

  • 01Design clearance: PETG shrinks slightly less than PLA; use 0.2mm clearance for sliding fits.
  • 02Overhangs: 55° unsupported; PETG sags more than PLA under its own weight.
  • 03Stringing: we tune retraction per-spool — if you see stringing on a sample, it's easy to dial out.
  • 04Bridging: weaker than PLA, use support for spans > 6mm.
  • 05Threaded inserts: heat-set inserts hold superbly in PETG, better than in PLA.

Enclosed chamber recommended to control surface quality and chamber temp. Prints cleanly on any modern FDM printer with a 0.4mm brass or hardened nozzle. All of our PETG jobs use filament dried the same day to avoid moisture-induced defects, and every spool is logged against the part batch for traceability.
How long is PETG 3D printing turnaround?+
